Reading-order pages: the most useful page you are not writing
Series readers search for reading order constantly. A clear page answers them and sends them straight to book one.
Search for almost any long-running series and you will see "in order" among the top suggestions. Readers want to know where to start, and fan wikis often answer before the author does.
Make the page obvious
Give each series its own page titled plainly: "The Lantern Coast books in order". Link to it from your home page and every book in the series.
What to include
- Each book in reading order with cover, title and a single-line hook.
- Clear numbering, including novellas: "Book 2.5".
- A note on whether books can be read as standalones.
- Publication order, if it differs from chronological order, with your recommendation.
- Buy links or a universal link per book.
Handle prequels honestly
If a prequel was written later, say whether new readers should start with it. Many authors recommend publication order for the first read because reveals land as intended. Tell readers what you would advise a friend.
Box sets and omnibus editions
List them separately, with the books they contain. Readers deciding between three single books and a box set will thank you.
Keep it updated
Add new books the day they go on pre-order. An out-of-date reading list sends readers to fan sites and, sometimes, to piracy pages that rank above you.
Reading-order pages are low effort, permanently useful and some of the best-performing pages on author sites. If you write series, write one this week.
